Development and validation of a new method for measuring friction between skin and nonwoven materials
Our aim is to develop incontinence pad materials which are less damaging to the skin but, before the work described in this paper, the necessary robust, validated method for measuring the coefficient of friction between them did not exist. The method proved capable of discriminating between different fabrics and also between the (wet or dry) skin of different subjects, and accurate enough to study the impact of skin and fabric characteristics on friction between them. The method is at the core of our ongoing collaborative work with the world's leading pad manufacturing company that commissioned the work.
