Double-weighted statement

This book, focused on the nineteenth-century Austro-German musical tradition, represents eight years of sustained and detailed work. It required the consultation of an extensive and conceptually challenging set of German-language primary source materials from the long nineteenth century. The terms of the book’s argument, bringing primary source materials into play with recent developments in continental philosophy (and theory more broadly), necessitated lengthy and detailed analysis. This is a substantial investigation of theoretical models of music history, and is aimed at critically rethinking our understanding of the Austro-German tradition, arguing, in the end, for its provincialisation.
