Les imitations pseudo-Ébusus / Massalia en Italie centrale: typologie et structure, présence dans les collections et dans les trouvailles de France
Two imitative coinages are identified and analysed for the first time in the context of the late Roman Republic. ‘Pseudo-Ebusan/Massaliot’ coins imitate types of Ebusus and Massalia, the Roman Republic and others. They were probably struck at Pompeii from the early first century BC. The ‘Pseudo-Panormitan/Paestan’ coins imitate mainly types of Panormus and of Paestum. They are attributed to Minturnae in the later first century BC. Both coinages reflect a lack of small change and open a fascinating chapter of monetary history, illustrating local solutions to bridge a gap in the monetary supply in locations close to Rome.
