English abstract

This article reviews our evidence on the textual transmission of Galen’s major treatise On Simple medicines (K. XI, 372-XII, 379), for which scholars currently have no critical edition. Based on extensive inspection and collation of manuscripts, the paper focuses on books I-V, with a brief insight into the problems posed by books VI-XI. The circle of John Argyropoulos, especially Demetrios Angelos, played a crucial role in preserving books I-V. Appended is the first edition, with French translation and notes, of chapters 1-3 of book I, where Galen exhibits his main principles and sets up the intellectual framework for his enquiry.
