Gli anni della Scala, 1972-1976: L’impegno per una socialità etico-politica del 'teatro di musica'
This is the first reconstruction of Paolo Grassi’s work as sovrintendente (general manager) of La Scala, Italy’s largest music institution and one of the international giants of opera production, in the period 1972-76. Based on research in La Scala’s Archivio Storico and Archivio di Deposito, the essay analyses the strategies mobilised by Grassi in the social, political, artistic, and media spheres to transform the traditional institution into a public music infrastructure capable of greater levels of production and collaborations with other cultural industries, open to new repertoires and genres of music and musical theatre, and accessible by the whole community.
