Additional information

The key to energy-efficiency in machines is the ability to reduce friction and, at the same time, operate at higher temperature where the fuel efficiency is higher and carbon emission is reduced. However operation at high temperature can lead to corrosion and reduced lifetime. A novel method described here has allowed formation of a new multi-component hard coating which is stable to oxidation to 1150degC and exhibits low friction. This can produce durable and energy-saving engineering components. The work has additional impact as it also gives the possibility of machining components without coolant fluids.
