English abstract

This chapter is concerned with Jewish life in the Federal Republic in the aftermath of the student movement of 1968. It argues that the 1970s and 80s witnessed a sea change in how the Jewish community defined its place in society. Intergenerational conflict was crucial: a younger group of Jews, educated at radical universities in Berlin and Frankfurt, began to challenge accepted aspects of Jewish identity, including religious orthodoxy, opposition to intermarriage, and absolute loyalty to Israel. In doing so, the younger generation initiated a process which, in future, would make it possible to feel both Jewish and German.
