English abstract

This article examines the enormous outbreak of anti-Jewish violence at the beginning of the German war against the Soviet Union. New sources, taken from German and Lithuanian archives as well as Jewish eye witnesses and contemporary reports enable a more concise picture of this crucial period, which marks the beginning of the mass murder of Jews in the Soviet Union. Thus it provides a detailed and accurate account of the pogroms and its perpetrators. It is made clear that the German initiative is empirically proven and therefore beyond doubt. Lithuanian cooperation in this violence is documented and explained.
