Giacomo Leopardi, Zibaldone
The first full English translation of Leopardi’s notebooks (1817-32) runs to 2,590 printed pages and includes a seventy-five-page introduction, extensive editorial notes and bibliography (273 pages), and a detailed editorial index running to 205 pages. The project took seven years to complete and received substantial funding from both private and public sources. Solutions to the myriad problems of translation were subject to continual revision and refinement by the editors, while the critical apparatus itself is constructed to the highest editorial standards. The edition constitutes a landmark in the study of modern European culture for the English-language readership worldwide.
