Montesquieu and England: Enlightened Exchanges 1689-1755, The Enlightenment World
This monograph is the first of its kind to assess the evolution of Montesquieu's relations with England throughout all his published works, and over the course of his entire writing career. The body of theory associated with the Habermasian concept of the public sphere is here used innovatively to provide a conceptual framework for the discussion of eighteenth-century Anglo-French intellectual relations, in fields of Enlightenment thought ranging from the political to the aesthetic. In addition, the author draws on hitherto unexplored newpaper and pamplet materials to uncover Montesquieu's impact on English journalism and political theory.
