This is a scholarly edition of a very substantial body of material, comprising 670 items of correspondence exchanged between Jean Paulhan, the editor of the monthly, the Nouvelle Revue française, and the critic Armand Petitjean, between the years 1934 and 1968. The edition, which took five years to complete, is assembled from items of correspondence which needed to be gathered from a significant number of sources. They required transcription and needed to be ordered chronologically. A 45-page introduction was added, as well as a thorough critical apparatus, sometimes requiring forays into other unpublished archives.
