Luise Gottsched the Translator, Studies in German Literature, Linguistics and Culture
This study offers a re-evaluation of the work of Luise Gottsched (1713-62), Germany’s first prominent woman of letters. Gottsched produced or contributed to over fifty volumes of translations over the course of her career. This monograph provides the first comprehensive overview of her translation work, showing how it was part of an ambitious, progressive programme which helped to shape German culture during the Enlightenment. Research for the monograph involved accessing an extensive corpus of primary literature (source texts, translations and other material such as contemporary reviews) and entailed many visits to libraries in Germany (Göttingen, Munich, Berlin).
