Additional information

The Search was an unusual film: it was commissioned by MGM, and conformed to some of the usual methods of Hollywood films of the epoch. Yet it concerned Displaced Persons in post-1945 Germany, and including a genuinely documentary aspect, with shots of 'real‘ refugee children, taken in a 'real‘ UNRRA base. The article considers the lesson taught by this film: that the American presence in the post-war world had to be guaranteed by 'soft power‘.
