Additional information

Chip-integrated optical biosensors are poised to make an impact as scalable and multiplexable bioanalytical measurement tools for lab-on-a-chip applications. Silicon nanowires will play an important role as sensing devices as they have much better sensitivity than the current commercially available sensors. This again is something several research groups are researching at the moment to experimentally implement across the globe. The papers contribution is on the numerical demonstration of the achievable higher levels of sensitivity that are needed in a lab-on-a-chip. The insight from this paper has led to the real-time detection of genetic alterations in cancer [http://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2010/an/c0an00449a/unauth].
