Additional information

This paper describes a major study into reuse of deep foundations; this is a crucial issue linked to concerns over sustainability as well economy in construction. Most recommendations for pile reuse currently suggest that it is acceptable to mobilise only a proportion of the load to which a foundation has previously been subjected. The series of centrifuge tests showed that pile capacity increases with cycles of loading and unloading and that it is possible to enhance the capacity of old foundations using rings of additional mini piles to stiffen the ground in the immediate vicinity.
