Significance of output:

Light alloys are a vital element in transport systems and the UK economy (see submission 10.1016/j.actamat.2007.12.019). Within an international team (ParisTech/ESRF) and industry (Alcan Intl.), we exploited synchrotron facilities for engineering fracture characterisation, and advanced, ‘local-approach’ fracture simulations. This paper addresses issues in the ease of model implementation and use of complex synchrotron data, bringing the goal of accurate materials simulation closer to tomorrow’s designers. Our linking of advanced methods with engineering simulation needs has gone on to other structural systems (particularly composites), with current/ongoing non-RCUK funding commitments >£300k, including Cytec (rob.maskell@cytec.com), USAF/EOARD (randall.pollak@london.af.mil), Luxfer (warren.hepples@luxfer.net) and Vestas (tomas.vronsky@vestas.com).
