Experimental validation of modal strain energies based damage identification method for a composite sandwich beam
Significance of output:
This paper validates predictive, theoretical models using experimental evidence on how structures made from lightweight polymer composite materials (PCM) degrade over time. This work is the basis for prediction of the life of ships and boats made from PCM plates composed of two thin, strong skins with a lightweight core sandwiched between them. The application of this can be found in current work in collaboration with RNLI towards the life extension of the Severn class of lifeboats. Verification of this can be gauged from a public statement by the CEO of RNLI on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjT0sDl1ygs&list=UU63kOMam6uIR2il5tTRYRCA&index=16&feature=plpp_video
