Significance of output:

Over 2 million bone grafting procedures are carried out per year worldwide to treat severe trauma, fracture non-unions, bone tumours, spinal fusions and failed hip and knee replacements. However, implant failure is multifactorial and ill understood. This paper represents the application of an interdisciplinary systematic engineering approach, together with Medicine, using specifically designed experiments to quantify the impact of porous structure on cell growth and translate this into predictive computational models for biomaterial optimization.
