English abstract
This article deals with one of the most discussed Gaulish formulae. The word βρατου has been taken as meaning either “in gratitude” (related to Latin gratus etc.) or “by command of”. The context does not allow for a firm decision either way. However, an inscription from near the German-Belgian border, which must be written by a local, bears the name Quintus Bratonius Gratus. Here, I argue, the Latin cognomen is best understood as the direct translation of the patronymic gentilicium Bratonius, thus providing an argument for taking βρατου as meaning “in gratitude”.
