Research Project Description

This on-going research project is a collaboration between McAvinchey and Magic Me, an internationally recognised organisation specialising in arts with older people, to develop new methodologies for and critical approaches to intergenerational arts practices.

Research Imperatives

To develop new models of intergenerational arts practice in response to the socio-cultural needs of an ageing society.

To develop new understandings about the specificity of arts methodologies within intergenerational practices.

To examine the possibilities of women-only intergenerational arts programmes in a cultural collections context.

To disseminate new understandings about intergenerational arts practices with researchers and professionals in arts, education and social care.

Peer Assessment/Quality Indicators

The research has been funded by The National Lottery, Arts Council England, QMUL Centre for Public Engagement and Creativeworks London.

The research has been disseminated through national and international networks including the Centre for Intergenerational Practice, EMIL (the European Map of Intergenerational Learning), and ICIP (the International Consortium for Intergenerational Programmes) as well as invited papers at performance conferences and seminars in the UK.

The Our Generations research report has been downloaded over 10,000 times between May 2009-October 2013.

Research Outputs

Publications including a peer-reviewed journal article in Research in Drama Education and two x 20,000 word research reports.

Seminars co-curated by Magic Me and McAvinchey for audiences including artists; local government staff in education, health and social care; academics from arts, sociology and public health; professionals working in cultural collections contexts.

Invited academic papers and conference presentations.

The co-curation of Continuing Professional Development for artists and cultural collections professionals.

1 x 10 minute and 7 x 3 minute documentary films about The Women’s Library projects.

A new programme of research (2013-14) focusing on intergenerational arts practices in cultural collections contexts.
