Developing the next-generation climate system models: challenges and achievements
This paper highlights issues related to the multi-scale nature of simulating climate and the Earth system, and numerical codes that can make full use of future computer architectures. It argues for the use of novel adaptive mesh algorithms and a direct outcome of this was the award of a four month Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences programme in this area (http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/AMM/index.html, Piggott co-organiser). The ideas presented in this work led to NERC grants on multi-scale atmospheric (NE/H002847/1, £190k, 2010-12, Piggott PI) and ice shelf (NE/G018391/1, £350k, 2010-13, Piggott PI) modelling.
