Additional information

This work presents the first use of an infrared microscopy technique applied to opaque samples. The advantage of the method is that samples can be analysed intact from the field in a 4 hour time frame. This represents a substantial advance over current culture based techniques. The technique is therefore ideal to monitor biofilm formation in drinking water pipes.
