This 160,000-word book relied on detailed research conducted in twenty libraries in six countries over a period of six years. It draws extensively on an extremely wide range of primary sources and academic literatures, including: legal scholarship, philosophy of language, translation studies and literary criticism. Further, it makes use of sources published in three languages, including American, British, Canadian, French, German, Italian and Spanish authors from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. The innovative comparative analysis of the book is grounded in its wide-ranging geographical scope, with discussion of case-studies ranging from Canada to the European Union.

This interdisciplinary, theoretically informed monograph casts new light on a range of salient issues arising from legal translation in an era of Europeanization and globalization of law. The book relies on a diverse range of literatures (including linguistics, translation studies and philosophy), in order to ground a detailed discussion of translation’s promises and limits and, more generally, to clarify the relationship between law and language. The book offers two detailed case studies (the Canadian experience of translation of federal statutes and the proposed uniformization of private laws within the European Union) as concrete illustrations of its major arguments.
