Additional information

This work demonstrates a methodology to make real-time measurements of the calcium concentration of the intracellular stores ([Ca2+]st) in intact platelets, which we use to confirm the role of calcium-induced calcium release in these cells. In collaboration with Dr Catriona Kelly and Professor Neville McClenaghan (University of Ulster), we are now looking to adapt this technique to investigate if there are changes in [Ca2+]st in CFTR-deficient pancreatic β cells. This work forms part of a project funded by a grant from the Diabetes research and Wellness Foundation (SCA/OF/12/13) as well as a PhD studentship from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (RS32).
