Additional information

This paper describes the first detailed structure of cellulose fibres from any higher plant. Neutron scattering provided key evidence about the structure of the cellulose, and used the absorption of heavy water to understand the morphology of the cellulose microfibrils. The penetration of water is of central importance for an understanding of the enzymatic depolymerisation of cellulose that is used in biofuel manufacture. The work involved collaboration with a number of institutions in the UK, France and New Zealand and was supported by funding from the EPRSC (EP/E026583/1).
