Additional information

This paper describes a new approach to testing and modelling hot gas ingestion into the wheel-space of a gas turbine stage. Experimental data and a new mathematical model were used to assess, and subsequently improve, the performance of rim-seal geometries. The work was undertaken in collaboration with Siemens Fossil Power Generation (£347k) and supported by EPSRC grant EP/G069107/1 (£286k). The work was presented at the ASME Turbo Expo 2011 and received a Best Paper Award from the ASME IGTI. Following the publication, the model has been integrated into Siemens’ 1D design codes (Ref: Yan-Sheng Li, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Lincoln).
