Additional information
This study focused on the practical application of microbial fuel cells in wastewater treatment. This system is one of a few operated continuously and fed with real wastewater whilst simultaneously producing energy. For the first time a coulombic efficiency as high as 60% was observed with real wastewater. The system is easy to scale-up and the cheap membrane used could substantially reduce the costs. This work was supported by an EU Marie Curie Action on biological fuel cells (MTKD-CT-2004-517215) and was in collaboration with Northumbrian Water.
