Additional information

This work presents the first evidence that ultra compact (less than 5-microns long) resonant cavities with extremely high quality-factor can be fabricated in supported optical waveguides (as opposed to membranes). The results provide a basis for densely packing components in photonic integrated circuits. This advances an emerging technology that is finding increasing application in telecommunications and optical signal processing. This work led to a series of other papers and contributed to the track record that led to two major grants, a FP7 Integrated Project (SMASH) and a £6.4M EPSRC Programme Grant (EP/101259).
