This article forms part of a special issue of Tate Papers, co-edited by White with Jo Applin. The special issue began as a symposium White and Applin convened at York in June 2009 called 'On Drawing'. Co-conceptualising the special issue, White and Applin selected three of the conference papers, including White's own, and commissioned two further papers, from Applin and Stephanie Straine. White and Applin edited each of the articles and managed the prints and permissions for each.
