The research was motivated by industrial needs (Aquabio Ltd, www.aquabio.co.uk, contact: Managing Director) to identify and subsequently control membrane fouling factors in the membrane biological reactors. The importance of the work has been widely recognised by researchers, including the Energy Lab, Environment Group, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology who have further developed the concepts (see DOI: 10.1016/j.memsci.2012.11.042).
