Additional information

This paper uses innovative, bespoke laser displacement scanning to investigate particle stability under fluid flow. This provides the first quantiative data on how bed structuring responds to the effects of flow history. This is a bold step in reducing inherent uncertainty in first-principle sediment entrainment/transport equations, a problem suffered by hydraulic engineers for nearly a Century. Specifically, it underpins numerical modelling and river engineering practices (e.g. river flood hydraulics, sediment scour, transport and deposition). Research was supported by EPSRC (EP/K013661/1, £1.4M).
