Additional information

Being invited to be a co-author on this paper demonstrates the international standing of SR in the field of cell therapy and its use in treating osteoarthritis (OA). This ‘highly accessed’ paper demonstrates that a paradigm shift in delivering cell therapy to osteoarthritic joints is possible, that mesenchymal stem cells when injected into a knee with OA (rather than via open surgery), can elicit repair. Dr Uchida (an orthopaedic surgeon) requested to visit our laboratory for 3 months in 2011 to continue collaborations between our groups in Japan and UK, which has resulted in several publications (eg doi:10.1007/s00586-011-1971-7 and 10.1186/1471-2202-11-84).
