A 3-DOF MR-Compatible Device for Magic Angle Related <emphasis emphasistype="italic">In Vivo</emphasis> Experiments
<02> This paper, published in the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, described a novel system for accurately positioning patients’ limbs in MRI scanners to take advantage of the "magic angle" effect. An innovative actuator (a heavily geared-down 3D printed air turbine) was described and shown to be MRI compatible, producing negligible artefacts and an insignificant reduction in signal to noise of the image. Preliminary clinical trials scanning the Achilles tendon of healthy volunteers proved the functionality of the device. The description of the techniques used to overcome the significant engineering challenges informed the development of subsequent MRI compatible manipulators.
