This substantial book (623 pages) provides a comprehensive account of the development of Leibniz’s thought in its historical context. As well as linking the threads of continuity in Leibniz’s theoretical and practical endeavours to his all-embracing unifying plan, the study traces these threads back to the intellectual traditions of the Holy Roman Empire in which Leibniz lived. The underpinning research took nine years. It required studying a very extensive body of primary sources in the original languages (Latin, French, and German), some of which are available only in rare editions or still unpublished, and an extensive secondary literature,
