Design and realization aspects of 1-THz cascade backward wave amplifier based on double corrugated waveguide
The availability of compact THz sources is crucial to enable applications in medicine, imaging or airport security fields. This paper is an output from the international EU-FP7 OPTHER project (involving collaboration with Thales and Selex) and reports the design and fabrication of the first vacuum tube amplifier to be operated at 1 THz, a frequency 5X the current state-of-the-art. It describes the novel solutions adopted in realising this device, including the cascade backward-wave amplifier, and a number of fabrication breakthroughs. The paper has stimulated invitations to lectures (UESTC, BVERI(China), Vestfold (Norway)) and new collaborations with China and US (BVERI, UC-Davis).
