Furetière’s Roman Bourgeois and the Problem of Exchange : Titular Economies
This monograph has been in the making for over ten years. Although the ostensible focus of book is provided by Antoine Furetière’s Roman bourgeois, the core of the argument concerns the change that occurred in nature and function of evaluative networks in the wake of the Fouquet trial during the early years of Louis XIV’s reign. To that end, the research analyses several bodies of documents not usually discussed in considerations of the novel (notably legal, numismatic and bibliographic). The complex theoretical framework (Sociocriticsm, Riffaterrean “hypertextuality”) mobilized to bring these strands together also required substantial intellectual effort.
