Additional information

This paper is based on a PhD conducted under the EPSRC funded Mapping the Underworld 2 project. Although TDR field monitoring is not new, the extensive nature and long-term monitoring ambitions for this research make it unique in the literature. The thoroughness and attention to detail required to achieve a robust long-term monitoring station is testament that this station is still working and recording data and providing extensive insight into the links between geophysical and geotechnical properties with seasonal variations. This successful design has now been taken forward by another research project and is being used in different soils.
