Large-eddy simulation of the flow around a freight wagon subjected to a crosswind
The flow around freight containers needs to be fully understood in order to optimize their shapes to minimize the crosswind forces. Thus, the state-of-the-art computational technique Large-Eddy Simulation has been employed to explore the flow around a freight wagon subjected to crosswinds. This novel research provides for the first time an accurate description of the instantaneous and time-averaged flow and the aerodynamic forces, which are not possible to obtain using other simpler methods. The obtained detailed flow physics puts this paper at the forefront of the research in this area, aiming at helping engineers in developing optimised freight container shapes.
