Additional information

This paper presents internationally-leading output energy from a single-frequency 2 µm oscillator-amplifier system based on multiple technology steps and optimisation through numerical rate-equation modelling. This work forms the background knowledge and expertise behind South Africa’s commercialisation of mid-infrared solid-state laser technology (http://www.techtransfer.csir.co.za/2013/05/midir-lasers; contact Francois Prinsloo, FPrinsloo@csir.co.za) and was the key motivation for the CSIR Executive to establish the Advanced Photonics Manufacturing Facility (contact Ndumiso Cingo NCingo@csir.co.za and see http://reference.sabinet.co.za/sa_epublication_article/csir_sci_v6_n2_a33). The international recognition led to a multi-million Dollar overseas R&D contract secured by the CSIR National Laser Centre (Lourens Botha, LRBotha@csir.co.za).
