Additional information

This work resulted from a collaboration between Durham University and ERPE. The partition of unity finite element method, used by the first author for wave problems in frequency domain (DOI:10.1016/j.compstruc.2008.04.006), was extended to deal with time dependent heat transfer problems with sharp gradients. Further collaboration extended the technique to time dependent problems with radiation (DOI:10.1016/j.jcp.2013.05.030).
