Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh
Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh is a major output from the research project “Contemporary Experimental Performance Culture in Vietnam”, which was funded by a grant from the Getty Foundation. The film is accompanied by an extensive film guide (c. 17,000 words) that analyzes, theorizes and contextualizes the film and the process of research. The film was researched, filmed, produced and directed by Barley Norton. The research and filming were done over a five-month period in 2009; all the digital videoing and sound recording was done by Barley Norton single-handedly, except for a concert at the Hanoi Opera House, which was filmed simultaneously by four video cameras. The post-production was done entirely by the director, with technical support from a professional editor.
Hanoi Eclipse is published as a DVD and has worldwide distribution with Documentary Educational Resources (http://www.der.org/films/hanoi-eclipse.html). It is also available to view in the form of online streaming for subscribers to Ethnographic Video Online, a database run by Alexander Street Press that has worldwide subscriptions from libraries, cultural organizations and individuals. The film has been widely screened in Europe, North America and Asia at competitive international film festivals, academic conferences and public cinema venues. These screenings include: Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie (Geneva, 2013), Open City Docs Fest (London, 2012), Goethe-Institut in Vietnam (Hanoi, 2012), Lifescapes Southeast Asian Film Festival (Thailand, 2012), Jean Rouch International Film Festival (Paris, 2011), Vietnamese International Film Festival (Los Angeles, 2011), Society for Visual Anthropology Film and Media Festival (Montreal, 2011), RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film (London, 2011 - awarded "Commendation - Intangible Culture Film Prize" by the panel of judges), San Francisco Diasporic Vietnamese Film Festival (San Francisco, 2011), the British Forum for Ethnomusicology Annual Conference (Falmouth, 2011), Society for Ethnomusicology Annual Conference (Los Angeles, 2010), EUROSEAS Conference (Gothenburg, 2010).
