Double-weighted statement

The first three of the double-weighting criteria apply to this book (c.220,000 words, 140 pictures). The book, developed from the author's PhD, is the result of seven years’ research (2002-2009). The argument adopts an interdisciplinary approach which combines classical philology, classical archaeology, art history and Reformation studies (the bibliography is 69 pages). Chapters range widely in subject in order to develop the broad thesis. Examining and photographing materials necessitated extensive travel (Sperlonga x3, Assisi x3, Rome x5, Naples x3, Athens x1, USA x2). Producing the book took 2.5 years due to the complexity of the illustrations.
