The Cipieres Project was begun in 1985 and the fieldwork component was completed in 2004, with analysis only finished in late 2011. It was a large and complex interdisciplinary programme of work involving four principal contributors with David Austin as PI. He has contributed approximately 50% of the volume text and a higher proportion of the illustrations and he has edited it. A very large body of primary data was assembled both in the field and the archives, engaging considerable expertise and long-term effort. The final result fundamentally challenges many preconceptions in French discourses of landscape, social and demographic histories.
