Theoretical and experimental characterisation of magnetic microbubbles.
This proof-of-concept report came from my idea to use magnetic microbubbles as transfection agents. The data were on the in vitro transfection of small molecules and of plasmid DNA, and showed an unprecedented five-fold improvement over the best-in-class laboratory transfection modalities currently available. Furthermore, the work opened up the hitherto-inaccessible prospect of in vivo drug and gene therapeutic delivery via blood-borne microbubbles actuated by external fields and activated by ultrasound. The team has subsequently validated this in vivo modality in a mouse model. This work was patented in 2011, and discussions have been initiated with Eli Lilley.
