Additional information

This paper described a new approach of mine to the targeted delivery of magnetically-labelled cells using the gradient coils in an MRI scanner. It drew on my experience and understanding of the actuation of cells in inhomogeneous fields, and took the unprecedented step of over-driving the gradient coils to create usable forces on the cells. The paper established the principle of action in vitro. Subsequent work has been on a rabbit model of human vascular disease (diabetic foot). This work formed the basis of a £250k EPSRC follow-on project, now under way, and was patented in 2010.
