<13>The task of understanding how best to design and transmit messages through communication networks (Wireless, Ad Hoc, Sensor Networks, etc) is one of the most fundamental problems in network engineering. Engineers have developed various practical heuristics but prior to our paper very little was understood when the network is allowed to use coding functions. Our novel method makes it possible to design (sparse) large scale communication networks that perform exponentially better than ordinary communication networks.
