Cafehaeuser, Bahnhoefe und Hotels: Zur Bedeutung der halboeffentlichen Raeume im Werk Joseph Roths
This article explores the structural importance of train-stations, hotels and cafes in the writings of Joseph Roth, considering both his novels and his journalistic contributions. Some observations and quotes come into play in the second chapter of my monograph (Topografien des Transits); in the latter Roth's contributions are, however, compared to other writers (such a Hemingway, Tergit, Tucholsky, Hermann) and, in contrast to the article, explored in way of a response to perceived challenges within the wider context of the interwar period in Germany and Europe.
