Additional information

Work reported in this paper is part of a large project “Bridging the Divide” funded by the EPSRC (EP/E001874/1) and industrial partners Airbus and BAE Systems, collaborating with two research organisations (EADS-IW, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Germany). The project is significant for joints between composites and metallic structures in future generation aircraft. The methodology and computer models developed in this paper enable predictions of the strength and fracture of a novel joint, to guide the design process and validation tests performed by collaboration partners.
