This book ranges widely across the history of the genre of travel-writing and its comparative literary and cultural contexts, with in-depth readings of the work of three authors. The book is the product of four years' international research in both Germany and Britain. It involved extensive work on the Bruce Chatwin Papers at the Bodleian Library (conducted with special permission before the embargo was lifted and the archive catalogued), and archival research in the German Literary Archive, Marbach, Germany. The range of its argument and research, involving English- and German-language literature, scholarship, and manuscript sources, underlies the request for double-weighting.
