Additional information

The Jack-knife and Bootstrap are well known tools in the field of statistics. Here they are introduced for application in the fields of coastal and offshore engineering for the estimation of extreme values of wave height. It is shown how these tools can be used to select one from several candidate probability distribution functions. The work has fed into the €6,530,000 EU funded THESEUS (Innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate) and other flooding research. It has also informed research in the fields of air quality mapping, and the risk analysis of highway projects.
